When people ask how I went from minimum-wage retail jobs to writing my own books and working from home, they expect a big moment. A lucky break. A brave leap.
The truth is less dramatic, and much more hopeful: I just kept taking one small step a day.
Small steps add up faster than you think
One step a day sounds like nothing. But it's seven steps a week, thirty a month, more than three hundred and sixty a year. One email to a brand. One page of your book. One tutorial in Canva. One post. On their own, they feel tiny. Together, they change your life.
The hardest part is never the work itself. It's believing that a small step today is worth taking, even when you can't see the finish line yet.
What working from home gave me
When my son was born, I didn't want to choose between being with him and doing work I love. Working from home gave me:
- Freedom: I decide what I work on and who I work with.
- Flexibility: I work during naptime, in the evening, or early in the morning with a coffee, whatever fits that day.
- Time: no commute, no rushing to daycare at 6pm, more moments with my family.
- Something of my own: my books, my brand, my ideas.
It isn't always easy. Some days the laptop stays closed. But I'd rather build slowly in a life I love than fast in a life that doesn't fit.
How to start, today
- Pick one direction. Not five. One thing you'd like to learn or build, for example a book, a skill, a small side business.
- Make the step small enough to do today. "Write my book" is too big. "Write down three ideas for my book" is perfect.
- Do it at the same moment every day. Naptime, after dinner, your first coffee. Routine beats motivation.
- Write down what you did. Seeing your little wins pile up is the best motivation there is.
- Be kind to yourself on slow days. A small step is still a step. Missing one day is not failing.
You can do more than you think
I didn't have a design degree, a publisher or a big budget. I had a laptop, free tools, and the decision to keep going a little bit every day. If I could do it, so can you.
If your first step is a book of your own, my course Your Book Journey walks you through it, step by step.
