10 skills you can learn to work from home

You'd love to work from home, but what would you actually do? Good news: there are more options than ever, and many of them you can learn online, often with free tools and without a degree. Here are 10 skills that open the door.

1. Community manager

Brands need people who keep their online communities warm and active: replying to comments, starting conversations, organising groups. If you love talking to people online, this is for you.

2. Creator manager

This is what I did for brands like Picnic and Kruidvat: finding the right content creators, briefing them and keeping the collaboration running. Great if you're organised and spend a lot of time on Instagram or TikTok anyway.

3. Video editor

Short videos for Reels and TikTok are everywhere, and creators and small businesses are always looking for someone to edit them. Free apps like CapCut are a great place to start.

4. Book publisher

Write and design your own book (a cookbook, children's book, journal or planner) and sell it through print on demand. No stock, no printing costs upfront. This is exactly what I teach in Your Book Journey.

5. Website builder

Many small businesses still need a simple, beautiful website. With Shopify, Squarespace or Wix you can build one without coding, and AI tools can help you with the texts.

6. Social media manager

Planning posts, writing captions and keeping track of what works. Lots of local businesses would love to hand this over to someone they trust.

7. Virtual assistant

Managing inboxes, calendars, bookings and small admin tasks for busy entrepreneurs. A great first step if you're organised and reliable.

8. Canva designer

Social posts, flyers, presentations, menus, product labels. Canva makes design accessible, and businesses pay for someone who has an eye for it.

9. Copywriter

Writing product descriptions, emails, blogs and website texts. With tools like Claude as your writing partner, you can learn to write clearly and quickly.

10. Email marketer

Setting up welcome emails and newsletters in tools like Klaviyo or Mailchimp. Businesses earn a lot from good emails, so this skill is valued.

Where to begin

Don't try to learn all ten. Pick the one that excites you most and take one small step a day. Practise on your own projects first, or for a friend's business, so you have something to show.

And if you'd like to start with something that's completely yours, a book with your name on the cover, have a look at Your Book Journey.
